Why Data Can Be Misleading is an interactive live course for ages 10+ exploring how statistics, graphs and online information can sometimes create misleading impressions. Through real-world examples from news, social media and online content, learners develop critical thinking and data literacy skills to question and evaluate the information they see.

One-time · 1 hour · Max 4 learners · Live online via Google Meet · Certificate of completion

This beginner-friendly live course (via Google Meet) introduces learners aged 10+ to the ways data and statistics can sometimes be misleading. Through an interactive one-hour session, learners will explore real-world examples from social media, news and online content while developing practical data and media literacy skills.

What will be taught:

Students will explore key concepts, including:

  • Why data is not always as straightforward as it appears
  • How statistics can be presented in misleading ways
  • How graphs and charts can influence our interpretation of information
  • Why missing information and context matter
  • How data can be used to support different claims
  • Examples of misleading data in social media, news and online content
  • Questions to ask when looking at statistics and data
  • How to think critically before accepting or sharing information

Class structure:

The course is 60 minutes long, including time for questions and discussion.

The session begins with an accessible introduction to data and why understanding how it is presented matters in everyday life.

Learners will then examine engaging real-world examples of graphs, statistics, headlines and online content to identify ways information can create misleading impressions.

Throughout the session, learners will be encouraged to look beyond the numbers, ask questions and consider what information or context might be missing.

Teaching style:

My approach is interactive, engaging and focused on developing practical critical-thinking skills rather than simply teaching statistical terminology.

The workshop combines clear explanations, visual examples, discussions and interactive activities. Concepts are presented in accessible language suitable for learners aged 10+ and connected to situations they may encounter online and in everyday life.

Learner interaction:

Students are encouraged to participate throughout the workshop by sharing observations, answering questions and discussing real-world examples.

Learners will practise identifying potentially misleading information and consider questions such as: What does this graph actually show? What information might be missing? Does the evidence support the claim being made?

By the end of the workshop, learners will have a better understanding of how data and statistics can be presented in misleading ways and will be better equipped to question, interpret and evaluate information they encounter in social media, news and online content.
